How can I adapt a planned route to my needs?

You can influence the route planning in Routago. With this functionality Routago stand out from all other navigation systems worldwide and contributes another big piece to the safe navigation of blind and visually impaired people in traffic.

Why is a piece of information missing from the map data?

Why does Routago not use a certain pedestrian crossing?

Map data is very dynamic and in reality is subject to constant changes and additions. Routago also uses a very high level of detail of information. It can therefore happen that the data is not completely up to date. You know that from every available map.

However, the map base used by Routago offers the unique possibility to adapt or supplement data that is not up-to-date. For an explanation of how this is possible, see our blog article: Custom map data for navigation.

What shall I do if this message is shown: “Routago requires access to motion data for navigation improvements”?

Where is the setting „Motion data“ in the system settings app?

Routago Assist uses the pedometer sensor of your smartphone to significantly improve precision. For privacy reasons, your permission to use this motion data is required.

The message is displayed by Routago when motion data is disabled on your smartphone. In order for Routago to use it, you need to turn on two settings.

These settings can be found in the app “Settings”. Choose “Privacy” and then “Motion & Fitness”. Fitness tracking must be turned on first, then you will find the setting for Routago Assist below it, which you must also turn on.

After general activation of the fitness tracking, Routago Assist may not be listed in the list of apps below it at first. Routago must then be manually closed and restarted via the iPhone’s app switcher. Routago will then become visible for setting in “Motion & Fitness”.

How do I “persuade” Routago Assist to plan a certain route?

Enter an intermediate destination that is on the route you want to take, but not on the route planned by Routago.

You can activate the entry of intermediate destinations by pressing the “Options” button on the navigation screen.

Why doesn’t Routago speak during navigation? Why are no directions announced?

Routago requires the fully functional compass to determine the announcements. If you have deactivated the compass calibration on your iPhone, no more announcements are possible.

You can find the settings in the app “Settings”. Select there “Privacy” and then “Location services”.

Can I use a different voice for Routago instructions?

Some users want to distinguish the system announcements of VoiceOver from the navigation instructions of Routago. If you want to use a different voice for Routago, proceed as follows:

In the Settings app, select “Accessibility”, then “Spoken content”, and finally “Voices”. Select a different voice than the one set for VoiceOver. This can be found here: “Accessibility ” – ” VoiceOver ” – ” Speech” – ” Voice “.

Why is my displayed position not exact?

Why are the instructions not always absolutely precise?

Satellite navigation (commonly referred to as GPS) does not have today on a smartphone the accuracy required for GPS-based route guidance on safe routes for pedestrians. Therefore, all commercially available navigation systems cannot provide reliable guidance for pedestrians with the technology available today.

By using all the sensors of the smartphone and sophisticated mathematical calculations, Routago Assist provides the best guidance for pedestrians possible today.

Why does the battery drain faster when Routago Assist is active?

Routago Assist intensively uses the GPS signal, the WLAN or mobile internet and also uses other sensors of the smartphone. In object detection mode, the camera is also used and high computing power is required to evaluate the camera video . All these functions have high demands on energy consumption.

Why are objects not recognized or incorrectly recognized in object recognition mode?

Routago Assist uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to evaluate the camera video. These methods are never error-free, but determine a probability for a detected object. Routago Assist uses a probability of 55% from which an object is output as the one recognized by the AI.

Therefore, you must not rely on an error-free recognition!

Artificial intelligence is based on learned information. If an object is not recognized, it has not been learned or not learned sufficiently. We are working on a continuous extension and deepening of machine learning.

Why must Routago Assist always have access to the Internet?
Why is there no offline function?

The calculation of a safe pedestrian routing in Routago Assist is complex and requires a lot of data. Therefore, the calculation is not done on your smartphone, but on our servers. The connection there via the Internet is therefore necessary for Routago Assist.

How do I share one of my tracks with other users?

How can I import pre-made paths (GPX files)?


You can swipe left on the name of a path under “My Ways” to see more functions. VoiceOver lists the functions under the actions. In addition to deleting and renaming, this also includes exporting the path.

The export is then done via an attachment of an e-mail. Send this email to the Routago user who wants to use the route.


The recipient selects the export from Routago Assist or another GPX file in their email app on their smartphone and sends it to their Routago Assist app using the standard “Share” menu. Routago Assist will launch and import the route. It appears in the list of routes, just like a self-recorded route.

You can also save the export from Routago Assist or another GPX file to an accessible location (e.g. a cloud). Users can use the standard “Files” app and load the route into Routago Assist using the standard “Share” procedure described above.

Which iPhone is recommended?

We recommend using a device starting from iPhone 8 / iPhone X or newer. From this generation on, the iPhone uses the satellite navigation system Galileo and achieves a better accuracy in GPS-guided navigation. Technically, however, you can use all iPhones that use at least iOS 12.

Apple’s statements regarding the Chinese satellite navigation system Baidou are somewhat unclear. It is not listed in the technical specs of the iPhones, but Apple is quoted in newspapers with the statement “the iPhone 11 uses Baidou”.

Is Routago Assist available for Android?

Android is not supported at this time. It is planned, but with no release date yet.

How shall I carry or hold my smartphone?

This question is relevant for route guidance. The best results are achieved when you hold the smartphone horizontally in front of you. However, you can also put your smartphone in your pocket. However, it is important that the smartphone keeps its correct orientation, otherwise the sensors used cannot determine the direction of movement correctly. Correct in this case means that even in your pocket your smartphone has the same orientation as when you hold it in front of you: the camera looks in your walking direction. A breast pocket on your shirt or jacket, or hanging in front of you would therefore be optimal.

Why is the direction indicator (arrow) sometimes wrong?

We have received isolated reports from users that the directional arrow sometimes displays heavily distorted, often by around 90° or similar. We could determine that in these cases the integrated compass no longer works correctly on some smartphones. You can check this by immediately calling up the compass app, which is supplied by Apple, in such a case. Here, they will notice a massive error in the display of the north direction in these cases. Usually, the north direction will then realign after 10-15 seconds in the compass app. After that, they will also find a correct direction display in Routago Assist again. We are depending on the correct function of the compass in Routago Assist and can unfortunately not correct this misbehavior of the system in Routago.
